100 years of the Michelin Guide

The Michelin Guide is 100 years old and to celebrate top chefs were invited to a private dinner in London. Check out what they had to say about 100 years of Michelin Stars.

A little history: The Michelin Guide

The Michelin guide was invented by two French men, brothers, Edouard and Andre Michelin.

The first guide, published in 1900, was designed to help motorists traveling throughout the French countryside. The guide included practical advice on trouble shooting your motor vehicle and where to find petrol stations and where to stay.

The infamous star system wasn't introduced until the late 1920s, according to the guide, hotels, restaurants and eateries were awarded pne star if they were "a very good restaurant in its class", they'd recieve two stars if they demonstrated "excellent cooking " and were deemed "worth a detour".

Finally, three stars were awarded for "exceptional cuisine, worth a special journey".

The rules have been tweaked over the years but the general judging standard remains the same.
