Why do I need to drink so much water?

 

Maintaining hydration is essential, no matter what the time of year

Though we're generally not as thirsty in winter, making sure you get your recommended intake is still key to staying healthy and warding off colds and flu.

"In winter, many of us can go all day without even thinking about drinking water." Warns Dr Anuradha Arasu, "This is a highly unhealthy practice as the change in season makes very little difference in diminishing the importance and requirement of water by the body.

"To prevent dry skin, dehydration headaches and constipation, men should be drinking on average about 13 glasses of water a day and women around 9 glasses. Herbal teas and clear soups may make this process easier."

"Maintaining hydration is essential, no matter what the time of year." agrees Butler, "Every cell within the human body requires water. It is central to the most basic of physiological functions affecting the brain, skin, heart, muscles, joints, kidneys and digestive tract."

However Butler suggests that individual requirements for water will vary according to diet, environment, age and activity levels. "A bare minimum of 1 liter daily would be a good place to start." She says.
