Once diagnosed with ovarian cancer, patients are referred to specialist treatment centers.  A combination of surgery and chemotherapy is standard practice.

Surgery aims to remove affected tissue – sometimes one or both ovaries, possibly the womb, and in severe cases even nearby tissue in the abdomen.  Chemotherapy is given to ‘mop up’ remaining cancer cells.

In 2005, Della Lamden underwent chemotherapy to shrink her cancer, in advance of a hysterectomy. After the surgery, she endured additional chemotherapy, before finally being given a clean bill of health. But in 2007 the cancer returned, and she had to undergo additional chemotherapy.  Then, Lamden was told she had six to 18 months to live.  Three years later, she is still around, and doing well.

‘I feel guilty that I continue to outlive others,’ said Lamden, ‘but I also feel incredibly lucky.’
