If you're just looking to dabble with Nordic Walking then start off by hiring or borrowing Nordic Walking poles from your instructor. The poles are the only real bit of kit you'll need to invest in specifically for the sport.

All other items like walking boots/trainers and comfortable outdoor clothing are at least reusable if you find you don't get along with Nordic Walking, but there's really not much not to love.

When it comes to investing in poles, the British Nordic Walking Society says that a fixed set of poles is preferable over adjustable versions: "We recommend that most people consider buying a fixed length pole.

Nordic Walking poles should be as light as possible and the mechanism used to make a pole adjustable increases the swing weight of the pole.

"Making the pole adjustable also significantly weakens the pole and so if you want to practice sport techniques, they are not a good idea. Even for general Nordic Walking an adjustable pole will transfer less power from the push off than a fixed length pole."

Nordic Walking poles are priced between £50-£100 and can be purchased from all good outdoor lifestyle shops, or try Bare Foot Studio or Trionz online.

Take care to get the right sort of poles too. As Beverley says: "Most instructors have poles for your lessons or they will hire for a nominal fee. However, if you want to buy a pair of poles you can do so.

"Remember there is a difference between trekking and Nordic Walking poles. Trekking poles have a looped handles and Nordic Walking poles have straps you fit your hand into. I recommend Exel Nordic Walking poles."
