Nineteen Eighty-Four by George Orwell

A book everyone should read, whatever the weather.

Nineteen Eighty-For has achieved cult status worldwide: we can speak of things as being 'Orwellian' and 'a bit Big Brother' without having even read the book. I think it's one of the most important novels anyone can read: for its vision of the future, its critique of the totalitarian nature of Marxist regimes and the frightening way in which information destroys itself.
Winston Smith is an ordinary 'prole' and works in the Ministry of Truth. He lives in a world where history is rewritten, language is downsized into Newspeak, and the mantra of the ruling Big Brother party is "War is Peace; Freedom is Slavery; Ignorance is Strength." Winston and his secret lover Julia join an underground organization that aims to overthrow Big Brother, but not all is what it seems. The ultimate betrayal that ends the book is a chilling end to a bleak, uneasy but essential read.
