Maisy would lie awake at night panicking about her husband when he was diagnosed with cancer, ‘I was constantly frightened, living in fear that I would lose him and that my whole life would change.’

Just the word cancer is enough to send a chill down your spine, so it’s not surprising that many people who are diagnosed with cancer or who are close to someone who has cancer fear for the future. Not knowing what’s going to happen means that anxiety levels can become unbearable as you fear the worst.

How to deal with it
Macmillan Cancer Support suggest that talking to a ‘sympathetic person’ can help by getting ‘concerns out in the open.’ They suggest trying relaxation techniques to help you to remain calm, ‘Many people with cancer – and their relatives – find visualization, breathing techniques and art therapy effective ways to ‘experience a sense of calmness’.

Penny Brohn Cancer Care provide tips and relaxation techniques for cancer sufferers and their loved ones to help combat fear, whilst Helpguide suggests going for a walk when stress gets too much, or finding the time to do something you enjoy every day. Just focusing on something else however small, can make a huge difference.
