Every hour five women in the UK are told they have breast cancer according to Cancer Research UK. With rising survival rates, demand for breast reconstruction is on the up. Breast cancer survivor Suzie Grogan investigates.

Two-thirds of women now survive the disease beyond 20 years so there is life after breast cancer, and reconstructive plastic surgery offers women the chance to literally rebuild their body image. Being diagnosed with breast cancer was a shock. Aged 44 with two young children, I just wanted them to take the breast away so that I could start treatment and feel confident the cancer was gone. Two years later, after I had recovered from chemotherapy and radiotherapy, I began to feel a sense of something lost and approached my breast care nurses. I began researching surgical options to reconstruct my breast, and one year ago this month I had the first operation at the Royal Devon & Exeter Hospital.
