A day with Gregory Harrison

Meeting Gregory Harrison should be mandatory. First of all, because he’s possibly the nicest person on Earth and second, because you can talk to him about anything, without embarassment or awkwardness as he is captivatingly open-minded. The first thing that struck me as I arrived in the hotel lobby where we were supposed to meet was...oops, and I’m getting ahead of myself. Let’s start from the beginning.

A couple of months ago, I was asked if I would be interested in writing about popular American actors who had starred in 80s TV shows. “Of course!” I answered (how could one possibly say no to that?) The first person who popped into my head was...you guess it, Gregory Harrison. Known for his role in Logan’s Run and portrayal of Dr. George Alonzo “Gonzo” Gates in Trapper John, MD, I remember growing up with his face staring down at me from the TV. To my surprise, I found that his career had not come to a screeching halt in 1985. His career has not stopped evolving and he has been able to shield himself from the infernal Hollywood machine and live a serene life with his family. And did I mention he’s a surfer?
The idea was to spend some time with Gregory Harrison and observe what kind of man and actor he’s become. And watch him surf. It could have been worse. If he had turned out to be the opposite of what he looks like (which is nice and personable), the day would have been looong. But I had a gut feeling, and it turned out to be right on. The first thing I noticed was that Harrison is even more charming in person.
The next step was to call the actor to organize a time and date for the interview. We all know that actors are always busy, and getting an appointment is like trying to get an invite to the Vanity Fair Oscar Party: not impossible, but almost. Once I got him on the phone however, he immediately put me at ease and a time and place was agreed upon.
So there I was, in this hotel lobby in Ventura on an April morning, He was there waiting at 9 am sharp. And like I started to say earlier, the first thing I noticed about him as I shook his hand was his eyes, giving me a typical Hollywood look: blue, direct, and served with a smile that would have made George Clooney blush.Even in jeans and Nike sneakers, Harrison has some of the Hollywood class we hear about but rarely see. Within about a second and a half of meeting him, I was smitten with his simplicity and charm mixed with a typical made in California attitude.
