The worst thing about Valentine’s Day for blokes is the pressure to get it right. Card, gift, restaurant...there’s a lot of opportunity to fluff our lines. It was hard enough managing to negotiate the minefield of Christmas shopping, without finding ourselves under the microscope for the second time in as many months!

If you want to do something nice, try turning down the heat on your other half by making the whole thing into a bit of a joke.

‘Why not have a competition to dream-up the least romantic thing possible?’ suggests dating expert Kate Taylor. ‘Should you alphabetize each other’s CDs? Put shelves up? Watch reruns of Minder? Clean the car? Make less fuss about the day itself and go out for dinner on the 15th, when restaurant prices have returned to normal...’

The best part of Valentine’s Day is that you get to spend time together. This way he gets to hang out with you all day, without worrying whether he’s being romantic enough. Sounds good to us.
