What is cellulite? And what causes cellulite?

First of all I want to understand what cellulite is and why it won’t just go away when I swap the steaks for salad.

‘It’s a genetic thing’ says Dr Ravi Jain, cosmetic dermatologist at Riverbanks Clinic in Bedfordshire, ‘90% of woman will get cellulite and you can even see it in young children’.

Cellulite tends to develop within the subcutaneous fat layers. That’s the fatty bit underneath the skin which contains bands of connective tissue, blood vessels and nerves.

Energy is stored as fat in the subcutaneous layers all over our body.

‘It comes down to the shape of the cells’ says Dr Jain, ‘the fat cells on the rest of the body are a totally different shape to those on the thighs and buttocks. They can store much more fat but they’re abnormally shaped.’

So when excessive amounts of fat are crammed into these cells they distort causing an overflow and the dimpled appearance of cellulite.
