Cold and cough remedies

The common cold is widespread during the winter months - everywhere you turn people are coughing, sniffling and sneezing. Heer's our specialists' advice.

> Use a sea water nasal spray such as Sterimar and saline nose drops 3 times a day to clear your nasal passage.
> To relieve congested sinuses, place a few drops of eucalyptus, tea tree or peppermint essential oil in a bowl of very hot water. Drape a towel over your head and spend a few minutes inhaling the steam.
> Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water, herbal tea or sugar-free squash.

> Dr. Froelicher advises that "cough mixtures are not recommended in any case".
> Anti-inflammatory painkillers (ibuprofen, aspirin, etc) are also harmful for pregnant women, but paracetomol is safe.
> Consult your doctor or pharmacist before taking any type of cough sweet.
> Drinking lots of water and inhaling steam can help to loosen a chesty cough.

Sore throats:
> Dissolve a teaspoonful of salt in some warm water and gargle for a couple of minutes a few times a day.
> A warm cup of tea with a teaspoon of honey will also relieve a sore throat.

Note: if your cold is accompanied by fever, consult your doctor. It could be listeriosis, an illness that can cause complications in pregnancy. The earlier it's detected, the more effective the treatment will be.
