Pregnancy health: ward off winter ailments

Are pregnant women more vulnerable during winter?

Your immune system doesn't work as well during pregnancy as it does normally. This is because it's tricked into tolerating the presence of the fetus, which to your immune sytem is a foreign body. This makes you more vulnerable to infections and bugs.

"Some pregnant women pick up everything that's going round, whereas others will sail through their pregnancy without picking up a single thing," explains gynecologist Dr. Charvet.

Whichever category you fall into, remember:
- Never take medication without consulting your doctor first. Medicines that you wouldn't think twice about taking normally could be harmful during pregnancy.

- React quickly to the first symptoms. Winter illnesses aren't dangerous if they're caught early, but secondary infections can soon occur in pregnant women.
