Premature delivery in pre-eclampsia

As well as high blood pressure and protein in the urine, other symptoms of pre-eclampsia include rapid weight gain - with localized swelling particularly around the face, feet and hands.

This is what happened to 35-year-old Dalia Haber, who suffered from pre-eclampsia in her first pregnancy.

“I went to my doctor for a routine appointment at 34 weeks and he was so concerned about the swelling in my fingers and ankles that he sent me to hospital. I was in so much shock that they wanted to admit me, I began to giggle nervously and then thought I had wet myself but it was in fact my waters breaking.”

The mum-of-three, who went on to have two normal pregnancies, suddenly found herself in labor which progressed so quickly she had no time for pain relief.

“It all happened so fast I was terrified and although I was well, my son Matty had to stay in hospital for several weeks afterwards because of his prematurity.”

The onset of pre-eclampsia can occur anytime after 18-20 weeks, when changes occur to the placenta, but it’s more common later in pregnancy.

“Early pre-eclampsia is classed as before 34 weeks and tends to be a lot more worrying,” added Dr O'Brien “The biggest risk to the baby, if the mother gets it early on in her pregnancy, is prematurity as the only cure for the mother's illness is to deliver the baby, regardless of the gestation.”
