Working on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day

Laura, 32, air hostess, London

If I had the choice, I used to always work over Christmas so I could be free on New Year's Eve.

But I soon changed my mind.

Two years ago I was on a flight to Barcelona.

I imagined how festive it would be there, I was expecting a lively atmosphere and parties in the streets.

Well when we landed, there was dead calm, the streets were deserted, the weather was awful...

And to make mattters worse, the other crew members didn't want to go out and celebrate: they all went to their hotel rooms and ate separately.

I found myself on my own watching midnight mass on the TV.

So last year, on the 24th of December on a flight to the Caribbean, I decided to take things into my own hands.

I turned up at the airport with Santa hats and flashing badges and I put Christmas songs on during boarding. People hated it!

The other crew members were too embarrased and refused to put on the hats and badges. The passengers laughed discreetly but they found it a bit daft. Scrooges!

The moral is, when people are on their own at Christmas they're msierable and when they're surrounded by lots of people, they're miserable too.

These days, I work on the 31st of December and I prefer to get a bit bored at Christmas.. but with my family.
