Fengshui or Feng Shui is the age-old Chinese teaching of aesthetics. It actually has less to do with taste than with improving quality of life. The aim is to use colors, shapes and design in such a way that positive chi – the naturally flowing electromagnetic energy all around us – is harmonized.

According to the principles of Feng Shui, the choice of colors and the arrangement of the furniture in a room can contribute to success in your private and professional life. The important thing is to arrange technical devices and furniture so as to produce a harmonious whole. We asked Feng Shui expert Paul Darby to explain how it works and give us some helpful hints on room design.
Why do you recommend arranging the living and working space according to the Feng Shui principles?
It’s important because only when the objects in a room are arranged in the right way is the chi energy – which is around us all the time – able to flow freely and supply the room with sufficient fresh energy.
How does Feng Shui affect work?
Zen, or the flow of the chi energy, influences everything we do. We are constantly surrounded by the flow of chi, which protects us and invigorates us when the furniture is well arranged and colors and light are used appropriately, whether we are relaxing, working, sleeping or eating.
What should we pay special attention to in terms of interior design?
I would say that the three most important factors are space, color and light. A room should not be overloaded. It should be furnished sparsely so that the chi can circulate.
The colors should follow the rules of Ba Gua (teachings of the eight phases of change). They relate to the Feng Shui points of the room, which are the four points of the compass: north, south, east and west.

The light. Place an uplighter in each corner of the room so as to promote the circulation of chi.
And what is important about the room layout according to Feng Shui?
You should ensure that your private and relaxation space – for playing on the computer, watching films or listening to music – is located in the western part of the house. This is the area where you are at your most creative, a space that shields you from the stresses and tensions of the world. In conjunction with this, earth colors, such as almond, caramel and terracotta, help stabilize the chi and invigorate you. Metallic colors, such as white, cream and silver-gray, enhance the chi and promote relaxation.
We need a lot of technology in the office. How can this be fitted into the Feng Shui system?
The way the items are arranged in the room should be appealing, functional and, most importantly, not cramped. This is particularly important when part of the living room is a dedicated workspace. It is important to keep the desk tidy at all times. Use of intelligent technology in conjunction with the right colors and the right lighting will ensure a constant flow of energy around you, which will enhance your mood, productivity and attitude to work.
