Matt Damon Takes on Mars In New Movie 'The Martian'

Experiencing déjà vu? If you've seen the first official trailer for 20th Century Fox's "The Martian," I don't blame you. The new movie, starring Matt Damon as the lead, resembles a mix of Matthew McConaughey's "Interstellar" and Sandra Bullock's "Gravity" both with plot and actors.

The story, originally written as a novel by Andy Weir, highlights astronaut Mark Watney (Damon) and his NASA team amidst a freak storm on Mars. In the words of Owen Wilson in "Armageddon," it pretty much looks like "the scariest environment imaginable." Caught in the storm and needing to evacuate, the other astronauts, including Beth Johanssen (Kate Mara) and Melissa Lewis (Jessica Chastain) among others, abandon Watney in the process.

Not unlike Damon's character in "Interstellar," he is once again stranded in outer space alone. Except this time he doesn't go crazy... that we know of. Instead, Watney decides to document his survival, stating, "In the face of overwhelming odds, I'm left with only one option: I'm gona' have to science the shit out of this."

Wondering if you should see the movie? I'm assuming that line may or may not be the deciding factor for many moviegoers. That, or the fact that the trailer, like most, gives away much of the film. But I digress.

Attempting to "grow four years worth of food here on a planet where nothing grows," and send out a message to NASA, Watney must survive until his crew returns for him. Perhaps however, "Interstellar"'s Cooper and Brand will actually be the ones to save him? Or maybe, "Gravity"'s Dr. Ryan Stone will run into him and this will turn into a romance.

Whatever happens, I know that I'll end up seeing it despite potentially negative Rotten Tomatoes reviews. That might say something about my taste in movies, but how could I possibly turn down another opportunity to see Damon's beautiful face on the big screen? Not to mention, Kristen Wiig, Donald Glover, Jeff Daniels and Chiwetel Ejiofor will be in the movie in addition to an already great cast, so there's that.
