Jeremy Renner Tries to Justify 'Slut' Joke, Proves We Should Ban the Word

Jeremy Renner is in hot water right now after calling Black Widow a slut during a recent interview with Digital Spy, and unfortunately dug himself into a pretty deep hole. Although the actor initially released a statement expressing regret for his words, he seemed to make matters worse during his Monday-night appearance on Conan by taking it all back. When discussing the incident with Conan O'Brien, Renner remained unapologetic, and unsurprisingly many people weren't happy.

"Mind you, we’re talking about a fictional character and fictional behavior, but, Conan, if you slept with four of the six Avengers, no matter how much fun you had, you’d be a slut," Renner said during the show. "Just saying. I’d be a slut."

Although I understand that life's too short to get upset over every silly thing a celebrity says, I fully understand why so many women were offended. That is, we (Renner included) all really need to start eliminating the use of words like "slut," "whore" and even "player" from our vocabulary amongst other profanities. Whether about a fictional character, a man, a woman, or whoever, those words are just ugly and unnecessary.

Originally referring to a woman who was slovenly or immoral, the word "slut" later became a derogatory term to describe someone (typically female) who has had numerous sex partners.

I'd be lying if I said I've never used the word, but with the uproar on both sides of the Renner debate — some who think people are overreacting and others who are upset with the actor — I feel we should all take a vow to stop using it. Hell, I've even called myself a slut before and I don't know why. Sex is sex. We all have it and I see no reason why we should all judge each other for how many people we do or don't sleep with. Serious relationships, casual one-night stands, threesomes... who cares?

If Black Widow (or anyone for that matter) wants to get with Hawkeye and/or Iron Man, she should be able to do so without having a mean-spirited label attached to her. I know we're talking about a comic book character (and trust me, I'm not going to lose sleep over this), but let the girl do what she wants to do and stop calling her a slut for it.
