Restrict yourself: Set limits for yourself and carry only as much cash as you need. No cheating with Credit/Debit cards either! When in doubt, leave the plastic at home. Now that’s shopping with discipline.

Off-season shopping: There’s a reason why our mothers used to buy clothes in sale season. Off-season shopping is a great way to make the most of discounts.

Waiting for a couple of months after a new item hits the market is also a great way of saving up, says Kathryn Finney, author of How to be a Budget Fashionista. She says that retailers start dropping prices after a couple of months to get it out the door, so that’s the best time to pounce.

Used is the way to go: Buying everyday items used is another way to save money. Books, CDs, even clothes can be bought from charity shops and vintage boutiques. If you fancy yourself as an online shopper, hit Ebay or Amazon to get some great deals on pre-loved goods.

Research: Whatever it is you have your eye on, try going online to check out the lowest prices on the market. Shopping comparison websites are there for our own good – use them and you’ll see the savings start to add up.
