Monica Gonzalez Mujica, 61, born in 1949, Chilean journalist.

Background: From 1973 to 1988, Chile experienced military rule under General Augusto Pinochet. Political diversity was rejected, freedom of the press was abolished and a curfew was imposed. Thousands of books were burned. Opponents were arrested, deported or executed.

What she fights for: Human rights, freedom of expression and an end to economic fraud.

Her weapon: Writing and investigating.
As a journalist, Monica has always shown bravery. For years, she investigated and denounced human rights violations and General Pinochet's financial wrongdoings. Now that Chile has returned to democracy, Monica is still a journalist and she runs the Center of Journalism and Investigation in Santiago.

Reputation and sacrifices: Her "liberal" activity was a major inconvenience for Pinochet's regime. She spent time in exile before being threatened, imprisoned and tortured.

Recognition: On the 3rd of May, Monica Gonzalez Mujica received the UNESCO/Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Prize in Brisbane, along with a check for $25,000.
