Christmas around the world

This year my daughter, Nina, will celebrate her first Christmas. I’m not sure if “celebrate” is the right word but I know she will be the happiest of all the family. Why? Because she is 10 months old and doesn’t have to do anything but sit and give everybody hundreds of reasons to smile every minute.

Because Christmas Eve is always held at my grandmother’s house, I don’t spend that much time in the kitchen. I am going to show Nina how to make herrings in oil, in sour cream and very atypical, but sincerely loved by my younger sister, in cardamom and onions.

The day before Christmas Eve, I always bake my specialty: carrot spice cake with mascarpone frosting. I can’t wait until my daughter grows up a little and eats it with all of us. As for now, she can only watch and put her little fingers in my plate.

Before Nina was born, Christmas Eve was all about eating untill I exploded, talking (or, quite often, passionately discussing) with my family and listening to my grandmother’s same old stories. But this year, it will be different. The presence of a new family member always brings changes, doesn’t it?

The one and only thing that won’t change is, of course, the gluttony...
