An emotional journey

Wewomen interviewed Alina Fernandez Castro, exiled daughter of Fidel Castro...

“ I left Cuba because my father treated me like an enemy,” said Castro.
At 38, she fled Cuba with her teenage daughter. This flight, worthy of James Bond, led her first to Spain, and then to the United States, where she now lives. Eighteen years later, still considered a traitor by her own family, Fidel Castro’s daughter has managed to build a new life in Miami, but her homeland remains beyond her grasp.
Despite the hardships however, El Commandante's daughter has built her new life with more ease than many others who have fled Cuba in worse conditions. An interview with a woman for whom freedom is the greatest treasure of all.

How do you feel when you look back on your journey? Are you proud of you success?
“Pride isn’t a word I use a lot, but yes, I’m happy, even if things are sometimes difficult. I faced very strong enemies alone. Emotional independence is very important. Especially when you come from a family like mine, who are totally devoted to an ideology that isn’t even relevant anymore, to an idea that’s been outdated for 35 years! This emotional independence enabled me to rid myself of their weight, which is hard to do when it comes to your own family. People who should be supporting you are against you. I succeeded but I still see people who don’t. Emotionally, if you lie to yourself, and deny your feelings, you’re done for. You have to find a balance in order to remain detached."
