Food supplements, beauty supplements, dangers, labels

After several years of silence on food supplements, a European directive recently made a stance on the issue to clarify matters in order to improve consumer confidence.

The directive defined very clearly what a food supplement is and also set strict regulations on labeling information, a list of vitamins and minerals that are beneficial to health, purety standards, maximum dose limits, a prescribed daily recommended dose (to be displayed on the label), and, if necessary, a warning about the risk of overdosing.

Supplement labels should tell you everything you need to know and should advise that a supplement is not a substitute for a balanced diet and in no case can it prevent, treat or cure illnesses.
