Around 12 million adults in Great Britain smoke cigarettes. Every year, around 114,000 smokers in the UK die as a result of their habit. Around half of all regular cigarette smokers will be killed by their habit.
Tobacco smoke contains around 4000 substances, of which more than 50 are carcinogenic (cancer-causing) chemicals. Every time you inhale, you're taking hydrogen cyanide, ammonia, mercury and lead into your lungs.
It's even more dangerous to smoke if you're on the pill, and smoking when pregnant can seriously harm your baby.
When you stop, you'll have whiter teeth, sweet-smelling breath, fewer wrinkles and better skin. You'll stop smelling like an ashtray, your home, your other half and the people you live with will also be smoke-free, and they'll love you for caring enough about yourself and them to quit.
