When Medical Aid Films first approached a couple of other more established medical aid organizations several years ago, Jauniaux said, they were far from supportive of what the new charity was trying to do.

Women shouldn’t be delivered by untrained birthing assistants, these organizations argued.

But the reality, Greenwold and Jauniaux said, is that in many countries, the vast majority of women have no other choice, no access to professional medical care.

“If you want to change things right now,” Greenwold said, “you have to work with what is, and not what should be.”
