Their philosophy is simple, based on two familiar proverbs: “Give a man a fish, you have fed him for today.  Teach a man to fish, and you have fed him for a lifetime,” and, “a picture is worth a thousand words.”

There are currently countless aid organizations that go into developing countries to provide emergency medical aid, but few set up hospitals and programs that can survive once they pull out. That, Jauniaux said, is what makes Medical Aid Films unique.

“We are trying to get organizations to leave something behind that’s sustainable,” he said. “We just have to change the mentality.”

By training local people who can then train other local people, medical personnel and international aid organizations can continue helping people long after they leave.

“It’s good to save a child,” Jauniaux said, “but what will happen to that child in six months?”
