There’s a lot of pressure on new moms to shed that baby weight faster than is humanly possible. We only have to look to Kim Kardashian or Jessica Simpson to see the kind of scrutiny women come under to shift that baby weight.
However losing weight after a baby isn't easy. Not everyone has the same amount of time and personal trainers as certain celebs, so don't despair if toning your tum is taking longer than you'd like. Actually, experts say that rushing your body into losing weight can actually do more harm than good.
Experts at Sportshoe say: “Attempting to get your pre-baby figure back immediately is not only unrealistic, it’s also dangerous as it can hinder the healing process and cause damage. Women who have just given birth need to be supported and cared for as much as pregnant women and they need to treat their own bodies with the same care and attention as when they were pregnant.”
Your body goes through dramatic changes in preparation for the baby so post pregnancy, there are extra things to take into consideration - leaking breasts, soft muscles and general exhaustion. Surprisingly enough, looking after a newborn baby is tiring work, and getting fit can be the last thing you want to do.
Postnatal fitness expert Margarita Bennett says new mothers need to be kind to themselves and to relax themselves into their workout.
“Try not to turn your fitness into a big deal, speed walk with the baby, get that heart beating, dance in the kitchen like a lunatic. Remember that your life has changed and enjoy your baby,” she advises.
