Adult Acne

Acne is common skin condition, however, contrary to common myths, chocolate, greasy foods and soda don’t actually make acne worse!

It’s often caused by ‘clogged pores’ or follicles on the skin that contain hair and oil glands. These become clogged by dead skin cells and oil production in pores.

Hormones produce sebum (not in itself a bad thing), which can go in to over-drive at times of stress, anxiety, and just before your period, which unfortunately leads to whiteheads, blackheads, pimples and in some cases cysts.

Treatments vary, but include benzoyl peroxide, tretinoin products and antibiotics, which may be in the form of oral prescriptions or as a cream applied directly to skin, and some medicines can be bought over-the-counter.

Do consult your GP, and bear in mind that it can take eight-twelve weeks for acne to improve with any treatment, if it becomes severe; your GP may refer you to a dermatologist.

Ease your symptoms:

Retin-A products are particularly helpful for mild acne, such as whiteheads and blackheads.

Avoid scrubbing your face or use of harsh soaps, don’t pick at skin, and look for moisturizers that say ‘non-comedogenic.’ (We love Dr. Nick Lowe’s Sebum Control Cleanser £10.20 for 200ml and Dr. Nick Lowe’s Spot Gel £9.18 for 15ml).
