Overcoming speed dating snobbery

Dutch courage

Because the advertisement for this event said ‘subject to availability’ we got there early. I really thought it would be popular – you know, among people who, like me, wouldn’t normally be caught dead speed dating. Sadly, as Ro and I were tentatively signing up for the ‘straight’ round it was apparent that boys were in short supply.

Then came my moment of devastation – I spy a guy I’ve fancied for years. He’s here to help organize the event, sadly not to take part in it. I skulk off to hide behind a curvaceous tipping chair. I’m showing my true colors now – not the brave dating experimenter but the shamed loser caught in the act.

Because the event’s a bit slow getting started, Ro and I head to the café for some food and Dutch courage. It is honestly not an exaggeration to say that I feel more nervous than I did before my driving test. All of them.

Ro persuades me not to bottle it and we go back up to the space figuring its better to hang out and be a part of things in the early stages, you know, rather than just burst straight in for the main event. Foreplay is everything.
