Ginger Rogers

"When two people love each other, they don't look at each other, they look in the same direction."

Virginia Katherine McMath was born in Independence, Missouri, in 1911. Her dancing career was launched when she won a Charleston dance contest put on by a traveling vaudeville act. The prize: a 6 month tour. A star was born.

Ginger Rogers remains most famous as Ferd Astaire's leading lady and dance partner. From 1933 to 1939, they starred in nine movies together.

In 1941, Rogers won an Academy Award for Best Actress for her role in Kitty Foyle. The early 40s were the peak of her career. By the 1950s, it became increasingly difficult for older actresses to land roles, and her career went into a gradual decline.

Rogers was married five times. Her first marriage was as a 17-year-old vaudeville perfomer to a fellow actor named Jack Pepper. She also followed the established pattern of taking a man 16 years her junior as her fourth husband.

Hey, a lady has to have a dance partner who can keep up.

Ginger Rogers and Ferd Astaire set the dancefloor on fire in Swing Time (1936). Can you imagine dancing in those heels?
