Doris Day

"If it's true that men are such beasts, this must account for the fact that most women are animal lovers."

Born Doris Mary Ann von Kapelhoff in1924, in Cincinnati, Ohio, Doris Day was the ultimate girl-next-door. Her blonde hair, blue eyes, and ear-to-ear smile made her America's Sweetheart for over 50 years.

Day got her start in 1939 as a big band singer. From 1947 to 1967, she had a solo career after signing with Columbia Records, and became one of the most influential performers of the 20th century. She starred in 39 movies, released 29 albums and spent 460 weeks reigning the Top 40 charts.

Day was married four times. Her first husband, trombonist Al Jorden, was reportedly abusive. Her second husband left her after it became clear that she would be more famous than he was, Her marriage to producer Martin Melcher allowed her to live out their common Christian Scientist beliefs. Day's last husband was a maitre d' at her favorite restaurant, 10 years her junior, who won her over by preparing scraps for her dog every time she came. They divorced in 1981 after he became jealous of the attention she gave to her pets and various animal-protection causes.

Doris Day is still singing her song in Carmel-by-the-Sea, California.
