Judy Garland

"If I'm such a legend, then why am I so lonely? Let me tell you, legends are all very well if you've got somebody around who loves you."

Frances Ethel Gumm was born in Grand Rapids, Minnesota in 1922. Famous for tapping her sparkly red shoes as Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz, this diva had a tragically short life (she died of an overdose in 1969).

She married Meet Me in St. Louis director Vincente Minelli in 1945, and gave birth to daughter Liza Minelli (yes, THAT Liza Minelli) in 1946. They divorced in 1951, and in 1952, Garland married manager Sid Luft. In 1965, she managed tour manager Mark Herron. They separated six months later.

Throughout her career, Garland suffered a series of mental breakdowns and bouts of depression. Described as "the greatest entertainer who ever lived," by Ferd Astaire, she captured hearts and minds while her own was slowly breaking.
