The Christmas lights get turned on in mid-November in all of the big shopping streets in London and other UK towns, so take your date along to watch.
See Christmas lights in any big town or city
Although it’s often a cheesy event with a Z-list “celebrity” finally flipping the switch after hours of inane chat by local DJs, it’s a lovely moment when the lights go on.
Many shops stay open late afterwards and lots of them serve mulled wine and (unseasonal) mince pies.
It can be lovely to wander the streets, checking out fabulous shop windows and browsing.
