Nicky Hambleton-Jones answers your style questions

1. Hi Nicky,
My dad is getting re-married in a couple of weeks, I have bought this gorgeous vintage cream lace dress, above the knee 3/4 length sleeves, and I'm struggling with accessories. What colors do I go for? Bright colors that are around now, or do I keep it subtle with browns etc??
Pease help.

Nicky says:
Hi Rosina,
Your dress sounds beautiful and quite delicate too, so I’m thinking that acid bright accessories would be too jarring and brown - too dull. In this kind of situation I always think metallic accessories are a good bet. They won’t compete with the outfit and will help lift it by adding a bit of shine. Depending on the shade of cream, I’d go for gold if it’s quite deep in color and silver if it’s a lighter cream. Although you can of course choose one or the other based on your personal preference. With regards bags and shoes, either continue the metallic theme or opt for patent leather neutrals which can be plain or have animal imprint for interest and a bit of texture. Heer are a few ideas for shoes which you could team with metallic accessories.
Good luck!

2. Hi Nicky,
I feel like I am in drastic need of a fresher look. I am 5ft 8 1/2 and a size 10/12. I often feel good in clothes I get but then see photos and feel horrible again, because the clothes I wear are so unflattering. My main features are my waist and arms - my legs are good too. What do you think would suit my body type? And do you have any hair and make-up tips for a fresh summer look or any tips on how to keep skin looking vibrant? Sorry about the many questions but I am stuck in a rut and don't know what to do anymore!
I hope you can help.
Many thanks

Nicky says:
Hi Julia,
From your description about it sounds like you’ve got a great figure, so not sure where you’re going wrong. If you’ve got a slim waist and arms, I would be inclined to say you’re probably erring towards being pear-shaped, but with good legs too your options are pretty endless. If I were you I would focus on emphasizing your waist
at all times. Layering waisted belts over tops and dresses will draw attention to your waist and bring your height into proportion too. Go for tops with bold print, color or detailing to draw the eye towards your slim waist and arms. You can also experiment with voluminous sleeves which will further help to emphasize your waist. Sounds to me like you need to experiment more, and if that doesn’t work I’d think about hiring a personal stylist to give you some advice.  Either book one in for free through a department store or hire your own from

With regards make-up tips: fresh summer make-up is all about a dewy complexion. I find using a light-reflecting foundation or mixing a shimmer powder into mineral foundations will help to give your skin an all-over glow. Keep eyes neutral with lots of mascara and a flush of peach blush on the cheeks followed by a slick of gloss in a pink. For minerals check out – I love the Stardust Shimmer powder. Also try Visible Lift foundation from L'Oreal.

Lastly to keep your skin looking vibrant, regular exfoliation is essential. If you’re in your 20s, a scrub once a week will do the trick. Once in your 30s and 40s more intense treatments like microdermabrasion and glycolic peels will give you a better result. The Olay Regenerist Home kit is ideal if you can’t afford expensive salon treatments.

Hope that helps

3. Dear Nicky,
I have a wedding to go to in September and would like to get the dress sorted sooner rather than later. What will the main fall trends be and what should I buy now for that event?
Many thanks

Nicky says:
Hi Hannah
You sound very fashion forward. The trends for fall winter are quite heavy and tailored, with a lot of tweed, houndstooth, heavy brocade, damask and 80s throwbacks in evidence. None of which is particularly appropriate for a wedding outfit in September when the weather' s still quite nice! There are a few key trend pieces which would work though:
- Scarlet dresses
- Sheer dresses
- Anything with ruffles or embellishment
- Elbow length gloves (probably too hot)
- Strapped and buckled shoes – only appropriate for very slim legs but would help to add a fashion twist.
- Black and white statement dress – the overriding trend is ‘Mad Monochrome’ so it would need to be in-your-face and bold.

Hope that helps? The fall/winter collections will start coming into store end of July, so hope you can wait till then.

4. Dear Nicky
I tend to always wear black or dark colors as a general rule. I would like to be more experimental with color now it's summer and there are so many bright clothes in the shops! How would I go about introducing colors into my wardrobe - I am fair-skinned with light-brown hair and have never been sure what would suit me?

Nicky says:
Hi Heather
You’re not alone in the color department. So many women struggle to make the transition from black to color, as they’re worried they’ll get it horribly wrong. The truth is that you have to break out of your comfort zone and go for it. We can all wear every color, but t’s getting the shade right that’s the tricky part. A quick and easy test to see which colors suit you is whether the color adds light to your face or drains you. If you feel like you need to wear more make-up, it’s probably draining you. Another option is if there’s a color you really like, layer it over black so it’s not directly against your skin, that way you’ll find it easier to wear. If you’re still feeling a bit nervous about taking the leap then I would suggest you start by investing in colorful accessories and slowly build up to clothes as your confidence grows. That said, if you find a dress in a fabulous color I really urge you to try it on – trust me, when you get it right, you’ll never look back.

5. Hello Nicky,
I am 26 years old, tall and relatively slim, but I have broad shoulders due to my natural physique and also play a lot of sport. Please can you give me some advice on the style of clothes I should be wearing to take the attention away from my shoulders?

Nicky says:
Hi Phillipa,
Sounds like you have a strawberry-shaped figure, or inverted triangle as some people like to call it; broad shoulders and slim legs. Heer are some tips for you to follow:-
• Wear deep V-necks or wide scooped necklines to soften your shoulders.
• Avoid halterneck style summer tops as they just emphasize shoulders
• Wraparound tops can also be a good choice as they soften the shoulders and draw attention towards your waist.
• Avoid double-breasted style jackets, and anything with shoulder pads.
• Opt for fine knit tops or dresses. These will not add bulk, soften shoulders and be more flattering.
• Emphasize your slim legs with fitted skirts.
• Choose elegant, high heels with or without an ankle strap to draw attention to your shapely legs.
• Dresses and tops with asymmetric necklines will help soften shoulders.
• Voluminous long sleeves will draw attention towards your arms and wrists and away from shoulders.
• Avoid choker or short necklaces; opt for long strings of beads instead.
• Avoid polo necks, crew necks or jackets that button up to the neck. Bold prints on tops should also be avoided, as well as heavy wool sweaters as these will draw attention to shoulders and add bulk.

Hope that helps.
