Give the people what they want

Making subscribers feel valued and in touch with the person they see on screen is the key to success. Social media sites like Facebook, Twitter and MySpace have made it easy to stay in touch with what viewers want, think and feel about your videos.

A personal touch is also important, as Luke advises, ‘Try to keep in touch with everybody; you have to keep talking to people. Also, get feedback. At the end of the day, they are the people watching the videos’.

Rebelling against the airbrushed beauty advert girls, size zero catwalk models and misleading advertising, the vlogging community strips back the gloss, and shows it like it is, unpolished, unedited, and straight onto your laptop.

For Luke, who, in her words ‘never had a break’, her rise to fame has been an inspiration to ordinary women and even men across the globe. For many, the idea of sharing their skills, influencing others and becoming an instant teen icon, is too much of a pull to ignore.

Christian Sanchini, or Shiva Queen, is a London based, 27 year old club host and drag artist, who too has made a name for himself on the makeup and haul vlogging scene.

His most viewed video, which received 61,500 hits, shows viewers how to recreate Lady Gaga’s rather dramatic Bad Romance look, and he’s since covered Beyonce, Rihanna, Britney and Pink looks, too.

‘I have a passion for makeup and beauty, it means that I can communicate with lots of people.' says Sanchini, 'People are sick of seeing ads on TV where everyone is air brushed and looks perfect. In these videos, people can see how a product really works and how to use it properly, without any kind of retouching. Plus, it's good entertainment’.

Keeping it up is the key to success. Luke has promised her viewers she'll upload at least two videos a week, regardless of how successful she becomes.

‘I like helping people’, she says. ‘I would have loved something like this when I was young, I just had to guess at everything’.
