Behind this incredible design lies meticulous craftsmanship. Each trench coat takes six hours to make, passing through 70 pairs of hands before it reaches the shop floor. Though Aquascutum is also known for its sharp tailoring, the design team is keen to point out that the belt of a trench coat takes as long to perfect as a pair of trousers. Much of the brand’s outerwear is produced at the company factory, near
Corby, Northamptonshire, supporting the British textile industry whilst simultaneously holding on to that ever-rare label ‘Made In Britain’. Whilst fast fashion has ruled the high street, and increasingly the catwalks with more designers including Cruise Collections to keep their customers happy, the Aquascutum mantra is seemingly ‘quality over volume’. Unlike most factories, the 75 machinists that conjure trench after trench are paid by the hour, not by piece; ensuring quality and craftsmanship are the priority.
