Also closely related to wheat, barley used to be a staple in times gone by but today it's mainly used to make beer. 

Barley can be used in salads, lentil dishes, cheese and vegetable bakes, for a refreshing change from the usual pasta/rice. Cook it in a pan of boiling water and add into your recipe.
