Soya milk: description, advantages and disadvantages


Soya milk is made from soybeans that are ground in water and filtered. It's usually sweetened and enriched with calcium (most of the time in the form of lithotamne, a type of seaweed). Read the label to check whether it's flavored or not. Vanilla soya mik is great as a drink, but not so good in a sauce!

Advantages: healthy and easy to digest. It has almost the same amount of protein as cow's milk, and it's the only dairy-free type of milk that can be made into tofu and yogurts.

Disadvantages: its estrogen content means that it should be drunk in moderation before the age of 3 (especially for boys) and if there is a history of breast cancer in the family. Its slightly 'beany' taste doesn't suit everyone, but try out a few different brands before passing judgment!
