Paternity leave, your rights

UK men are entitled to paternity leave if:

•    your wife or partner is expecting a baby
•    you are expected to care for that baby, even if it isn’t biologically yours
•    you are adopting a child, even if you are in a same sex relationship.

-    You need to have been with your current employer for at least 26 weeks by the 15th week before your baby is due.

-    You need to give your employer notice of the due date and your intention to take leave in writing, and you need to take your leave all in one go.

-    You need to earn more than £90 a week to be entitled to statutory pay, which is £123.06 a week or 90% of your weekly earnings. If you don’t earn that much, then you will have to speak to your local Jobcentre plus to see if you can get income support.

Many employers these days supplement the statutory payment themselves, or even let you have full pay. You need to speak to your Human Resources Manager at work to see what their provisions are.
