Celebrate the meaning of Christmas with your children

Depending on how old your children are, Christmas can be a good time to teach them about other religious festivals that coincide with the festive season such as the Jewish festival of Hanukkah.

Hannukah is a festival of light during which one candle on an 8-branch menorah or hanukiah candelabra is lit a day, and you receive a present a day for 8 days. It reminds Jews of the reconquest of Israel in the second century after the desecration of the Temple of Jerusalem by Syria. The lights represent the phials of oil which were found in the ruins of the temple and used to keep the candles burning for 8 days. During Hanukkah, Jewish children are given a four-sided spinning top inscribed with Hebrew words meaning "a great miracle happened there."
