Your baby has developed in a sac of fluid, along with the placenta.  Once the mucus plug has gone (a ‘show’) and the cervix has begun to dilate, the sac is no longer protected.  It can split at any moment from the pressure of the baby’s head or the other’s contractions, releasing the amniotic liquid.  This your waters breaking.
