Increase in time spent on housework per week after marriage

 - Increase in time spent on housework per week after marriage
Do you go all soppy at the thought of tying the knot in a fairytale princess frock and saying "I do"? Well, think again: according to another American study*, getting married increases the time a woman spends doing housework by 7 hours a week. How romantic!

The average married woman spent 19 hours per week on chores, compared to 12 before. It makes sense when you consider there are more meals for two to cook, fewer nights in front of the TV with a pot of Nutella, more dirty clothes to wash...And the more kids you have, the worse it gets: it was found that mums with three or more kids devoted 28 hours a week to housework.

The good news (yes, there is some!) is that men pitch in a bit more when they tie the knot, though not as much as their wives. Married men spent an average of 8 hours a week on housework, compared to 7 hours back in their bachelor days.

The other good news (heaven forbid we might be putting you off marriage!) is that overall, we spend a lot less time on domestic chores than in the past: 1000 hours a year as opposed to 2000 hours (eek!) back in 1968.

*conducted by the University of Michigan Institute for Social Research (ISR), based on interviews with 8500 families.
