How to break up with someone you love: Do's and don'ts

Break up don't: Talk in tongues

Of course it's easier to break up with someone when you're using clichés - it means you're avoiding the issues and covering up the real reasons for your relationship fail with buzz words.

Hanna, 34 says: "This guy I was seeing fed me all kinds of clichés about our break up saying he wasn't ready for a relationship - but weeks later he was with someone new. It hurt that he couldn't be honest."

Don't explain away your break up with the usual one liners; "It's not you, it's me," and "I'm not in a good place right now" might well be true but said out loud and you'll come across as really heartless.

Break up do: Chose your words

If you're going to break up with him at least make him feel like the relationship hasn't been totally generic by giving him a break up talk that is tailored to the time you have spent together.
